The Poll is thinner but taller than a normal claw hammer face, with a slight crown. All I can say is it will work fine as a hammer as long as you are not trying to send a stake into a boulder.
I most commonly have it handy while I'm splitting wood, I use it to tap wedges that don't need the force of the maul, and as a sort of pickaroon.
