>>2611238I'm in RI. I've never been to New Jersey before but there are supposed to be some legendary spots around Raritan bay. There are definitely striper around in August..up here they stay till around November depending on the weather. Last year we were catching them in the surf middle of the day in August but some years midday bite can be slow.
Just took a quick look at the map of Sandy Hook and it looks like a good spot. In summer I look for beaches that face the open ocean because water will be colder and the striper are more active during the day. At night look for places where water is dumping out from rivers or back bays.
Fly fishing for striper is a different game than gear fishing not sure what you will be doing but you have a big advantage in current with a fly line because you can control the drift and make better presentations to picky fish. A lot of times striper are lazy especially if there is a lot of bait around so in those cases a dead drift or swing in the feeding line can be the best way to catch them. Tie some flatwings or seaducers and drift them in the surf or current and watch the magic happen. If the waves aren't too big I usually fish a floating line most the time but an intermediate line is a better all around choice for striper fishing in the surf.
