Please help. I have a 12ft surfcast rod (40-60lbs, 4-10oz) and would like to pair it with a conventional reel for the purpose of sturgeon/surfcast fishing.
Finding something for surfcast is pretty straight forward but I'm running into problems deciding on a reel for bank sturgeon fishing. I'll be fishing the Columbia river from the bank for massive sturgeon (up to 10 feet). I spoke with some locals and they said I need a reel that can do the following
>holds 300-400 yards of 40-50lb mono>cast 100+ yardsI found a reel that should do the job (pic rel)
https://www.amazon.com/Penn-Squall-Conventional-Fishing-SQLII15SDCSLH/dp/B08DDDKVRB/But I'm unsure which size I should get. I often see surf fishermen using the size 15 and I believe they prefer the 15 because its easier to cast? But that wont work for me because I need more line capacity. The size 30 or 40 would work but I'm worried its not gonna be as castable as the smaller size.
Has anyone ever casted a large conventional reel?
