The Upper Midwest had a ton of super devastating fires during the late 1800s into the early 1900s. At the time, that region was heavily reliant on logging and forestry for its economy, and lack of regulations meant that wood unfit for construction use was usually just discarded on-site. As a result, any dry summer would basically enable massive fires on a windy day. This culminated in the Peshtigo, Hinckley (pic related), Cloquet, Michigan, and Thumb fires, among others.
