i'm in a similar boat, bought 3.5 acres of forest land, 40 minutes from eugene (oregon, USA) it's kind of hilly here though which is my only complaint. we did a normal stick built house that's on grid though. We picked up the adjacent lot so now we're on about 8 acres. feels good to own a miniature forest.
It's been a life changing experience moving out here; in 3 years i've learned a ton about gardening, solar, plumbing/irrigation, electrical work, landscaping, drywalling etc etc.
