The small mouth bass is more brown, less likely to have a defined lateral line marking, has a mouth corner in front of his eye, prefers colder and cleaner water, pulls harder, longer, will jump multiple times, and generally has a firmer cleaner tasting flesh, as a consequence of how they live in cooler cleaner water.
Both are fun to fish for, but people with easy access to both will generally disdain one or the other depending on what they value.
