>>1720373Find a region that interests you and fuck around to your heart's content. There are long-distance footpaths everywhere, though I don't recommend GR trails. I like to create little challenges; last September I spent 2 weeks in Sardinia attempting to consume only foraged food and beer; in November I hiked from Orléans to Tours with no tent or sleeping bag, just to see if I could.
Gear depends on where you want to go, and the season. For example England has no biting insects, so there I use a tarp instead of a tent. In Spain in the summertime, there's no need to carry a thick sleeping bag. For northern Scotland or Scandinavia, pack like you're going to Alaska.
Unfortunately now is not a great time to be doing any of this, but it's a great time to make plans, learn about regional history and edible plants.
