Geometrically you can gauge it just fine ,but not grippiness.
Pic related is the "best" sole i've had, and its on a piece of shit shoe that is just stealth single layer crocs.
Its also a piece of shit chinesium, where the outsole is a thin layer of rubber on top of cotton like foam, meaning once you wear trough the rubber it will start pumping from the undersole cotton directly to the shoebox. But the softness of the rubber crumpling on foam meant it has the most excellent ice grip i've seen on a shoe.
