We used these kind of buckets because my Opa used to make wine so we had a lot of them. You don't have to notch the bucket but that could help with stablilty for larger animals like rats. Also fill it to around where the 15 litre mark is, though I'd go a tad lower for rats actually incase they can swim up enough to get out. You can use a lot less if you're using bleach obviously.
