>>576158Really depends on what you want it for.
Google Maps will cache map data for offline use. Can't route with it, since it needs a network connection to do that.
There are alternative maps (orux? motionx? don't remember exactly, but those two come to mind) that offer some other features, may or may not line up with what you want to do.
One thing I don't really like about GPS is that when you start zooming out to get a "big picture" view, all the little roads/trails I'm interested in disappear. Good reason to carry a paper map; but a map along with a GPS takes a lot of the guesswork out of orienteering.
Ther'es only a handful of times I've refered to my smartphone as a map (most of hte time I fucking hate navigating with it), but goddamn the real-time traffic and aerial photos on a decent screen are nice.
Most of the time a GPS is just a confirmation for me that i'm headed in the right direction. On the sled it's nice to have some idea of what's over the next ridge.
When I get home, download/archive all the position data from the day.
I've dicked around with a lot of GPS's, and never found a "command line". There's diagnostic/test modes I can get into, but no command line. (We use Android in one of our products at work... sure, still Android/Linux, but it's not going to be accessible to the customer/end-users).
