I use the 1 man tent and sleeping system I got while I was in the army (had extras from being in for 8 years so CIF got all the fucked up kit to clear my inventory out, I kept the good extra’s). I dunno how cheap that stuff is surplus because I’ve never checked around, but it’s very reliable and it’s served me well through many a cold nights. On the negative nights I’ll tie a woobie along the top portion of the tent and use it as an insulation layer for the structure, along with a lean-to set up over top of the wind cover. This works very well to keep the internal temperature up as long as possible to aid the sleep system. Great thing about the way the wind cover works is that I can set up a small stove inside it with the chimney coming up through the unzippered portion and out the lean-to above. This allows me to get the tent warmed up and cook/light to read with while still having seclusion from the elements. With the spot I set up at over this winter I was able to just leave this all set up through the whole season with worrying about it getting messed with. As shitty as the weather was it was, those months were easily one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life.
