its not common in america because camping there involves more often than not, summertime and temps well above most safe food handling temps(3-5C for anything but fish or eggs)
the food is precooked so it will stay longer than raw foods, im no chemist/engineer but as long as its not over 15C all day youd be fine for several days, and if it goes sub zero overnight your food will last even longer.
also the best food to pack winter/subzero camping when your water supply tends to freeze.
