Several thousand people go there to hunt copious amounts of deer once the season starts in September, but you can still go a decent time without seeing a single person even then. My favourite time to go is during the middle of winter, when the extreme storms and isolation can make you feel like the last man on Earth.
As for the island itself, it's very reminiscent of a more-northerly Upper Peninsula or Manitoulin Island-type environment. There are these limestone fissures in the central highlands that have gorgeous waterfalls and caves, and old growth pines still remain in abundance. It's a shame that the Quebec government wants to rip the island up over natural gas deposits, fucking frogs can't ever something alone if they see the potential for profit in it.
