The extreme end of what I'm talking about is pic related, which is completely ridiculous and noob-tastic. There's no reason to strap a dozen different pieces of gear to the outside of your pack, for it to clang against the frame and other gear, sway back and forth as you're hiking and generally expose your stuff to the elements much more than it needs to be. The point of what I said, "gear that promotes and of the above practices" was the way that external frame backpacks, at least the traditional designs--feel free to educate me about about newfangled designs--tend to encourage users to just clip or strap their gear to the frame instead of compressing it all in a single compartment, which is more secure, more water resistant, more space efficient and generally just better.
