The Dinaric Alps start in southern Slovenia and Istria and then continue with the Croatian coast into Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania etc. Even if Balkan is sparsely populated true "wilderness" including wildlife is usually only found in the mountains.
Google Maps tells me its 6 hours from Vienna to pic related, its the mountain range Velebit on the northern Croatian coast. Roads in Bosnia are horrible and it will take you longer, plus its pretty sketchy. Everything else is far away.
