I've owned 2 westies an older 71' and an 80', the 80 was better. In both cases I got them for less than 1K each and fixed them up and later sold them for a substantial profit, though that wasn't my intention, people were always offering to buy them from me and one day I was offered enough that I couldn't resist, so I sold. they're fun vehicles.
You don't have to over-complicate it, you can just get a regular cheap AWD cargo van, some milk crates and a hammock and call it done. That's what I do now.
