If you're riding often, having good gear that holds up is worth the money.
This is even more true when it comes to weather-resistant outerwear. A $300 jacket that actually keeps me dry in the winter is worth every penny over a $100 jacket that soaks through by noon.
And for armor... Has to fit right and be comfortable for a day of riding, and offer a level of protection I feel comfortable with. The cheap stuff is hit or miss on both aspects.
