I'd suggest getting a quality PCP air rifle over a 22lr, you can hunt/practice with a silencer and pellets are dirt cheap, $10 gets you 500 decent quality Crossman pellets and you can practice in your backyard if you live in a suburban/exurban area. Sure, a .22 air rifle is quarter the power of a .22lr but they both kill the same game. For the actual hunt get quality pellets like JSB Hades, the things are like mini black talons and are extremely effective.
Look into the Air Venturi Avenger, you can get the whole package of rifle, air cylinder and scope for around $900.
