There were so many different mines going at one time they actually used the dirt excavated to make the streets in town, and you could sometimes find gold while walking in town. That's why Troy NC was 'the town paved with gold.'
Marble mines seem like they'd be a lot easier to get around in, most old gold mines I have to be hunched over the whole time.
Also, don't disturb the bats. Here on the east coast White-nose Syndrome is claiming a bunch of them, and humans are know spreaders transferring it from cave to cave.
