bison wool and musk ox wool is the best by far. depending on your needs and what region you live in for availability.
bison is more durable than merino wool, as soft as cashmere, more water resistant, hypoallergenic, and warmer.
but its a lot more expensive.
musk ox wool is comparable but more on the rugged side and less on the performant side.
a good bison hat and gloves will set you back 150-200 dollars but they will outlast many pairs of merino gloves if you actually work in them. picrel my pair from somewhere around 2008-2010.

fine merino wools and lambswools are the best performance per dollar and the most widely available.
alpaca and cashmere are good alternatives that are also pretty cheap, for people with sensitive skin or lanolin allergies if you can't afford bison.
