Who ever felled that tree cut off the holding wood which is a very dangerous thing to do (mostly with large trees though) The holding wood acts like a hinge/guide for the direction of the tree falling and also prevents the bottom of the falling tree from popping backwards towards the cutter. While his concern is justified his over-reaction to such a small tree is not.
