Cuts aren't acutely deadly unless you hit a vital bloodvessel. Stabs are what kills you in confrontations with bladed weapons. Think of hunting weapons: Spears, javelins, bows, crossbows and guns all rely on pin point penetration.
In that sense a knife design that allows you to mount it on a stick and use it as a spear (not as a throwing spear obviously) is more effective. pic related.
This is all theory of course. If you actually camped on a frontier like Alaska or bumfuck nowhere where dangerous animals roam, you'd carry a pistol anyway.
