Do jackets like these actually work or are they just ugly yuppie clothing? My brother swears by his arcteryx but I know for a fact that nothing he does involves leaving his heated car for any length of time.
I went to an eddie bauer store today and saw jackets like these with claims of 650, 800 fill power but then the jackets themselves are as thin as a few sheets of paper and didn't feel like they could stop even a light breeze which makes me think it's just marketing bullshit.
They had thick full length parkas with the same down rating which I was interested in but seeing velcro on 'performance' clothing really turned me off. The outer shell material and the fake fur wasn't anything to write home about either.
By contrast a michael kors jacket I found at marshalls looked properly made with higher quality fur, outer shell and had snaps instead of velcro, but the insulation was made from recycled plastic bottles instead of duck down. Does it really make a difference if the jacket is thick?
I spend a few hours sitting stationary outdoors at the gun range and need a really good jacket that will keep me warm even when my metabolism is stone cold.
