1. shitload of material used, work done and time consumed - totally not worth an effort is staying for less than 2-3 nights. for me it's usually 2-3 hours of work for me and my fiancee, but only if the materials are easily obtainable
2. not possible to build in most enviroments because of lack of logs and branches
3. still not rain/snow proof, medium windproofness, another 2 hours of adding leaves and moss if you want to achiewe complete weatherproofness
mental comfort depends on your mind. my first night in hammock was indeed pretty akward, but now I just can't do it other way than hanging. it helps you build confidence - to less you have to "protection" the more familiar you get with the wilderness. the days of locking myself up in a heavy canvas tent to protect from wildlings are long gone, now I enjoy myself as a part of the sorroundings.
