Day X of fly fishing (sorry I lost count)
Today I used the popper fly thing. It floats and it's supposed to be for bass and panfish? Well, bass are nowhere to be found on this lake as of late and the bluegill would bite the trailing feathers or just look at it and swim away. Very disappointing performance. Literally the only fly that works here is size 24 green midge and only when it's being held on the surface.
I was AGAIN disappointed with the inability to use a fly rod and fly line (6wt) in a breeze. Against the wind, the fly would just collapse right in front of me, with wind across it would push my fly over the rod. The big popper was better in this regard, but none of the fucking fish wanted to take the popper or any big fly for that matter so what's the point.
In my last outing I came out feeling well just catching bluegill 1 foot from the shore. But honestly, this just tells me I should be using a tenkara rod or one of those cheap telescoping "tenkara" rods from aliexpress for 10 bux. If this is all I am capable of doing with a fly rod, I might as well cut my losses and go tenkara mode.
Maybe if I was in a stream surrounded by trees with 0 wind, casting small flies wouldn't be a problem, but it's just not the solution for my particular needs (there is ALWAYS a breeze). Another problem is that I am unable to teach myself proper fly casting techniques. I have reached a peak where my garbage technique is not improving. I will continue using flies and incorporate them into my spinning gear rigs, but I'm no longer going to go any further with fly fishing (rod and line).
This concludes my fly fishing blog.
