>>1374899If the spool is straight metal and you don’t wind the line tight or tie a good knot, the entire thing of line will spin around the spool. Like if you have a big fish on and tighten the drag, the spool will stay in place but the fish might start pulling out line because it spins freely.
Mono grips the metal spool better since it isn’t as slick. But some companies are designing the reels with braid in mind. Pic related shows how Lew’s puts a rubber strip around the spool. You can tie braid straight to the spool and the rubber will grip it better.
