>>237770I see nothing on the Selk'bag website indicating that these are supposed to replace your tent. All models indicate only "water resistant" shell fabric. But even if it were waterproof, would you really want to, essentially, zip your face up for the night? To me, that sounds absolutely horrid.
All I see here is a down suit that's only rated to be warm down to 44 degrees and that weighs 4 pounds. For reference, the Western Mountaineering Highlite sleeping bag weighs 1 pound and will keep you warm down to 35 degrees.
There's a reason that virtually every company making insulation for camping has gravitated toward the mummy bag design. Your extremities get colder faster than your core. In a mummy bag, your body minimizes surface area, and your core can share its warmth with the rest of your body. It's really only a secondary concern that the mummy bag design saves bulk and weight.
If you don't like traditional mummy bags, or feel constrained in them, there are a number of sleeping bags available that have full-length zippers optimized for use like a quilt. The Western Mountaineering Summerlite, for instance, has a full length zipper, and the hood even flattens out when you use it like this.
Down suits like in
>>237768 really have their niche in extreme cold. They're meant for being mobile, walking around camp, not for sleeping in by themselves.
Also, you'll notice that an important feature distinguishing a "srs bzns" down suit, like the Feathered Friends one, from the Selk'bag is the fact that they will always have a zipper centered on the body that extends all the way down to the crotch. That zipper is meant to be used. If a company field tests their down suits for even a couple hours, they will realize the importance of this zipper. I don't know how someone would pee when wearing a Selk'bag unless by totally disrobing first. This feature is also what sets abominations like
