Chicago is like the hub of all freight train traffic in North America. The closer you are to there, the more trains there should be. Mpls / St. Paul is pretty busy, and North Platte, Nebraska has the largest rail yard in the world.
The only advice I'm really going to give you is DO NOT go by yourself. Find people who know what they're doing and go with them or just put it off until next year. Also I hope your bullshit detector is strong because idiots who claim to know what they're doing and people who can actually teach you the way safely are not the same thing but can appear to be.
