>>1207183I did my 110 mi route in these and was very happy the entire time, but boots are honestly the safe choice and more versatile for when he gets back and wants to do things in the winter. It was summer so I just let my feet get wet and they dried fine everytime.
I own a pair of salomon 4D quest gtx's now and they are hands down the best boot I've ever worn. I cannot recommend them enough and they go on sale for around $110-$120 pretty often. Very short break-in period.
Polypropylene sock liners are a must imo also. PP has an extremely low moisture regain and sends all your sweat straight into the wool. Your feet will feel dry and like they can breathe rather than that wet stuffy feeling you get after you've had shoes on all day. Dry skin is less likely to blister.
