Same with red cedarAre you sure... there are/were red cedars that are 1000s of years old, surely they can survive some fire (or you're wrong about fire disturbances being as common as you think). Red cedars live long enough that their tops break off and the tree regrows from a side growth, repeatedly, forming a "candelabra". The dead, broken trunks don't rot because red cedar is insanely rot resistant, which helps it thrive in the wet PNW.
