First time poster here,
Currently 18, living in UK, I finish college this year and plan to go on a gap year in January 2014 for 5 months with an amigo, starting in New Zealand, then onto Australia and Islands like Papua New Guinea and Fiji, before heading to SE Asia and finally China

If you know of any good places to hike/wilderness camp in NZ/Aus/PNG please dump them here

I've a friend who surfs this regularly who I'll be spending some time with so he's going to give me some info but literally anything you can advise me on or tell me would be appreciated thousands of times over

i would keep an acre of farmland and an acre of lawn for grazing, that should make you pretty self sufficient while still being manageable.

You should think about a decent sized fish pond aswell.
