Late December of 2017, me and a few buddies were gonna go camping in Black Balsam, North Carolina. The peak was about 6500 feet I think. I live on the coast so the higher altitude is a big change for me. anyway, we were really unorganized so the first night it was just me and one other friend and we got there after dark. We went to set up camp at about 10:00 PM. We were both carrying rucksacks and I had my camping 12 gauge. We were tracking up the mountain in an area neither one of us had ever been before, way past sunset, and the temperature was in the teens (Fahrenheit). We were in thick woods for about half a mile when it opened up onto a grassy rocky plain going to the peak. About a quarter mile into that, I heard coyotes up ahead on the 'trail'. I'm no stranger to coyotes and know they don't typically bother humans, but I had my shotgun loaded and was a lil paranoid given the circumstances so I chambered a shell and shot it in their direction. It was then that we heard someone say "hello" as if they were asking a question. cont.
