>>1397796Speaking of not splitting, I was cutting brush out yesterday and saw a sling shot frame shape in a multiflora rose bush trunk. I've never worked rose wood before and figured it would probably split, but boy oh boy it really splits. lol I've only seem plum wood split that much. I guess in the field or at camp you'd need to have some wax to dip the ends and hope it won't split until you get back. Then it'd need to be vacuum stabilized with resin then into a toaster oven. So, I learned that rose wood isn't good carving or whittling wood for around the camp.

Sling shot frames are a nice easy whittling project around the campfire. If you bring some bands along in your pack you can go stumping pretty quickly. If you have kids, it is one of the better ways to keep them engaged and not bored.
