For my fellow ausfags, the domestically produced canvas packs are great. I have pic related from summit gear, made in katoomba. Have had it for years and it easily has the potential to last me a lifetime. No meme features or anything prone to failure - I'm not a fan of zips, in-built rain covers, sleeping bag compartments etc. The canvas is also fairly waterproof when seasoned, though I usually use a pack liner on the inside.
Other aussie manufacturers to look at are Wilderness Equipment, Mont, One Planet and Mountain Designs. Not sure if any overseas brands make anything comparable, most american/euro packs seem to sacrifice durability for lightness when choosing materials and don't really hold up to thick scrub or rough handling.
You honestly can't go wrong with a solid canvas pack.
