>>2190802>>2190805I feel tomatoes are one of the biggest leaps in quality when you grow them yourself out of most fruits and vegetables. It's true tomatoes will "ripen" from green if you leave them off the vine, but what gives them flavor is the sugars and other nutrients they get from the plant as it feeds and ripens the fruit itself. So even fancy heirloom varieties like brandywine you can get in a store will still never taste as good because they have to be picked under ripe just to compensate for shipping and shelf life. Also something happens to tomatoes when they go in a fridge, even after ripening. The texture changes and somehow they lose a lot of flavor, and all grocery store tomatoes have at the very least been shipped in refrigerated containers.

Crappy picture from this morning, my new favorite variety is the Hungarian ox heart, it's my first year growing one but they're going to be a staple going forward. Ripened pretty quickly, I've been getting fruit for a couple weeks now and they're super meaty and delicious. Pretty much the perfect sandwich tomato, and I eat a lot of tomato sandwiches!
