OP, one thing that has only been mentioned once ITT but is very important is adjusting the valves. Not sure about all brands, but on my Kawasaki, and on my friends Suzuki, the exhaust valve gets too tight over time, so the clearance has to be adjusted (gapped). It's not rocket surgery, so if you can use hand tools and have a good feeler gauge like in the pic, you can DIY. The engine starts to run like shit if the valves get out of adjustment, so you generally know when to do it. It's also a good idea to check the intake valve at the same time, but I've never had to adjust one, it's always the exhaust.
