In fact, I strongly suggest getting good gear first, then using what's left of your moto budget on the bike.
You'll probably go through a few sets of gear before you find what works well for you and your riding style. But it's important to have something. Crashing hurts.
Helmet
Jacket
Gloves
Pants (Depends on what you're doing; quick trips around town I don't bother, longer trips or any offroad and I gear up)
Boots (again, type of boot depends on your riding... ankle support and a decent sole are important regardless.)
