5: 20 feet is about right for a newbie. Go stand in a field with 20-30 feet of line and just play around with it until it kinda makes sense. Just pick it up and put it down until you're comfortable then start playing with shooting line and casting less line. Remember, the rod should be doing most of the work, and make sure your line Is straightening out behind you before you try to do the foreward cast, and make sure your back cast isas close to exactly 180 degrees from where you want your forward cast to go as you can get it. It's going to be frustrating for a while but one day you'll wake up amd it will just kinda click
