The class probably only had so much time for everyone to finish their beginner projects, and he was probably having to sit next to pic related and was both distracted and wishing for it all to end. He should, however, have at least saved the painting part to do at home in his own time and done a better job at making tighter lines, practicing on paper or cardboard first. Next project he should especially focus on carving and painting lines with a patient, steady hand, so he can make it even greater than these.
