Watch the documentary "The Call of the Wild"; it's also about McCandless but was more critical of the book and his actions. It's hard to find but you can torrent it.
Sean Penn tried to sabotage this guy's film, too. He made a bunch of people Chris met sign some kind of contract that made their "life story" exclusively available to Penn's screenwriters for like 10 years.
Turns out the Penn film also exaggerated/totally fabricated certain parts of the story. The Alaska state police published an official report a long time ago saying that McCandless died of starvation and had no poison in his system. All that about the potato seeds was some kind of pre-test report.
And it turns out he also had a backpack with him with all of his identification and $300 in cash. So while he burned his original money, he kept all the earnings he made working the grain and leather shops. AND he had a map, but the crossing point wasn't marked on it.
Seriously if everyone who defends/bitches about McCandless on this board watched this movie it would clear a lot of shit up.
