I'm sure the other guys in the thread will have suggestions but I think a ~7' rod and a 2500 sized spinning reel are just about where a new angler should be. Look for a rod that can throw up to maybe 5/8 oz but no more than that. again, just my opinion but I think 1/8-1/2 is a great general purpose rating for the beginner angler.
