The Ten Essentials is a list of things you should always have on you when /out/, it originated in the Mountaineers manual "The Freedom of the Hills" and was based on the curriculum for their mountaineering course. It's been tweaked slightly over the years, but the basics have largely held up
Navigation (map & compass/GPS device)
Sun protection (sunglasses & sunscreen)
Insulation (extra clothing)
Illumination (headlamp/flashlight)
First-aid supplies

Repair kit and tools (needle and thread, tape, etc)
