I often have that problem here on my hilly terrain with heavy clay (once that's dry it barely takes up water at all), so I'm using flower pots dug in the ground to ensure that I can water quickly but it still stays where it's supposed to (pic). There's other methods as well for that, like building little dikes around the stems.
