Well, that's one advantage. If only Bics didn't start to die long before they run out of fuel. But it's not like a white gas kept in a clear bottle doesn't do the exact same thing.

- Fungal spores won't be harmed either. But your greatest risk with those is to have some allergic reaction. You won't drink more than you breathe actually, so if you're safe breathing, you're safe drinking. They also contain some good protein. Without prions, don't worry.

Now you need to realize that unless you perfectly avoid any contact between your hands and untreated water, you are at greater risk of contracting some disease when filling your bottle than when drinking from it, unless you drink several gallons. This alone says a lot. Also, you won't get all that shit in your water if you carefully pick your source, meaning, not the still pond with murky water nor the river with a hundred dead fish floating at the surface. With proper water, boiling will be almost perfectly fine.

Though that doesn't mean it should be your only mean to purify water. Filtering, boiling and chemically treating it is certainly not overkill.

I understand this is the point of this thread, but my advice would be to take the stuff you planned to take anyway. At least, you won't be doing things just because you've been told, and will actually know what you're doing. It would be stupid to never use something because you've been told by some nobody on the internet that it's useless, without having checked it first.

We're all different, we have different needs, we need in different places... shit, I haven't brought a stove and a cooking pot for years, my only two knives are a 9 inch blade one and a small skeleton knife, I don't have a tent, I usually wear knee pads... that's how relevant my advices about gear would be.

The best way is to learn the hard way, you won't learn much on the internet. Just go, it's not like your life will be at stake; at worst, you'll have a shit weekend, though in this case it would mean you'd have learned a ton of things.
