I picked up a dog the same way while road tripping through Canada. Nearly hit her on the highway at 1am in the middle of nowhere. We chased her around for a good 15 min before we were able to grab her. She had no idea where to go and kept running back into the highway. Eating grass and shit. No tags.
We had another 2hr of driving to the hostel so we just took the dog with us and left her in the car overnight with the windows cracked (weather was mild). Next day we took her to a vet and they identified the microchip and contacted the owner. Glad we didn't stick around to hear what the owner had to say about a 4hr drive to retrieve their dog.
