There were a lot of musk oxens. One of them attacked me, but fortunately did not hit me as we were at least 2-3 days (60 km) of hiking from the nearest nearest person with a satelite phone. And even then you could not know if the weather would be good enough for a heli rescue. Scary.
Musk oxens are stupid animals. They are something in between a sheep and a goat, but with a weight of 400 kg. When you get near them they will stand in a circle with the females and youngs in the middle. The bulls will stamp their feet to the ground and look scary. But if you approach them even further, say 50 m, they will run away, but allways uphill.
That is how I almost got hit. I was uphill a large bull that did not see me and I did not see him before I was within 20 m of him. Then he tried to run away from me, but uphill in my direction. I just managed to lie down and he passed within a few meters in full speed.
