I think kick stands are not needed 90% of the time but a touring bike is where they are actually useful. You can't always just lay down a bike when it's got 50lbs of gear bags strapped on wherever. I think the best kickstands ar the ones that have two legs and prop up the rear wheel so you can do basic maintenance. At least in theory, I actually haven't taken this bike >30 miles yet (gay snow and work)
Btw a big back pack (or even a duffle bag) strapped to a cheap rack will work fantastic for short trips and still have great capacity. Bike bags are just a bit nicer, good for long trips.
Protip for poorfag waterproofing, just put a garbage bag inside your regular bag.
