The Nuraghes were an iron-age people who inhabited the island, and they left literally tens of thousands of stone towers standing (a more typical one can be seen in the second pic I posted). A rather unfortunate land ownership law passed in the 19th century caused most of them to be torn down and made into stone walls, unfortunately.
