With practice (a lot of practice) I've learned to use my aluminum messkit as a kick-ass dutch oven. Use the kind where the lid locks over the pan so you can flip it over in the embers and get both sides cooked evenly. I've also used a deep billy can with reasonable success.
Then I upgraded to a stainless steel set with a copper bottom, and it burns my shit every time. Dunno what it it about aluminum but in place of cast iron it works just fine.
