I was planning on starting some oyster mushrooms in coffee grounds in mason jars tomorrow and I had a question for when they grow up to be big and stronk.
I happen to be in a Uni with a ton of recycling bins everywhere, and I've got access to a paper shredder. Could I use the torn up paper/cardboard as a medium for mushroom growing? I don't see why not as it's mostly cellulose, just like hay or straw that I hear about other people using, but I don't want to try it out and lose nice big chunks of mycelium that took weeks to grow.
On a similar note, does pasteurizing with wood ash in water really work? I've heard a lot of conflicting reports. It seems like the pH of it would kill off most bacteria, but again I'd rather play it safe than be sorry later.
Pic related is the stem bud of one of the oyster mushrooms I got from the store. Looks like they were using straw or hay.
